Seward Memorial Library is hosting a poetry contest celebrating Seward’s 150th birthday as well as Seward County’s and Nebraska’s sesquicentennial. Library patrons of all ages are invited to submit original poems. Poems must be 150 words (not including the title) and be related to our community or state. The poetry can be in any form and preferably submitted online. Participants must have a Seward Memorial Library account. The entry deadline was Friday, April 21 at 12:00 noon. Because judging poetry is so subjective, the staff has chosen to award cash prizes (from the Friends of Seward Library) for submissions by conducting a random drawing. Writers in two age groups – those who are 12 years old and younger and those who are 13 years and older – can win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place prizes.
Winners of the two contest age groups will be announced during the poetry reading on Sunday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m. All lovers of poetry and the written word are invited to attend and encouraged to read their own original poem. You do not have to be a contestant to participate in this afternoon event. All submitted poems, with the contestant’s permission, will be displayed in the library. Celebrate National Poetry Month and take a turn at the microphone!
