The Seward Memorial Library’s long history began over a century ago as a reading room established in 1888. The small, humble reading room endured, and in 1913, was able to reorganize into a city library. This library was housed in the Andrew Carnegie building near the public square. As the library grew, this building soon became too small to meet the needs of its patrons.
By 1990, it was clear that the library needed to be housed in a larger space, and the Seward Library Foundation started a campaign to raise money. On September 2, 2003, the Seward Memorial Library opened its doors to the public in its brand-new building. It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since this time. This year, we will mark this date with a celebration and an open house.
