Shane Tucker, Highway Paleontologist, uncovering a fossil

Lions and rhinos and bears! Oh my!

Although this sounds like a line from the Wizard of Oz, it represents prehistoric Nebraska extremely well. Nebraska has an exceptional fossil record with specimens from 91 of the 93 counties. Join Highway Paleontologist Shane Tucker on a fossil safari as we explore ancient wildlife that inhabited our state millions of years ago. Shane has collected more than 10,000 fossils including remains of giant tortoises, saber-toothed deer, camels, bone-crushing dogs, sling-shot horned deer, and marine reptiles.

Shane grew up in York and studied geology and paleontology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has worked for more than 25 years with the Highway Paleontology Program at the University of Nebraska State Museum.
