Introducing Library League: A New Way to Belong at the Library

Something new is coming to Seward Memorial Library this fall!

Beginning September 8, we're replacing our traditional After School Programs with something new: Library League.

Library League is an ongoing after-school community for kids in Kindergarten through 8th grade built around books, creativity, games, exploration, challenges, and friendship.

Instead of coming to the library for a different activity each week, kids can become members of a community that keeps going throughout the year.

So, What Is Library League?

Think of Library League as part club, part adventure, and part game. Members will take on challenges, explore the library, discover books, solve puzzles, create things, work with other kids, and help their League complete larger adventures. There will be different ways for kids to participate based on what they enjoy. Some might want to create and design. Others might want to explore and solve mysteries. Others might want to play games and crack codes.

There's no single way to be a Library League kid. That's what makes it a League.

Find Your Place in the League

Library League will have three guilds:

🎨 Creator Guild — for kids who like to make, design, draw, build, and create.

🔎 Discovery Guild — for kids who like to explore, investigate, find clues, and solve mysteries.

🎮 Game Guild — for kids who like games, puzzles, strategy, codes, and challenges.

Guilds aren't competitive teams. They're groups built around shared interests, and members can find the place that fits them best.

And if their interests change? They can change guilds, too.

It's About More Than Showing Up

One of our biggest goals with Library League is to give kids a reason to keep coming back to the library. Kids are busy. Between school, sports, activities, and family life, missing a program is sometimes unavoidable. Library League is designed so that missing one meeting doesn't mean you're suddenly behind everyone else. Members can continue their adventures, work on challenges, and reconnect with their guild through the League's activities at the library and at our Jay's Club Outpost.

The goal isn't perfect attendance, the goal is belonging.

And Yes, Books Are Part of It

We're a library, after all! But rather than making reading feel like another assignment, Library League will put books naturally into the adventures kids are already having. A book might contain a clue. A library section might hold the answer to a mystery. A character might inspire a creation. A book recommendation might help another League member.

Reading becomes part of what kids are doing, rather than something separate from it.

Library League will also connect in the near future with our existing Reading Dragons program, giving kids another way to make reading an adventure. Reading Dragons already uses collectible cards, games, and social play to encourage reading and build reading habits.

Who Is It For?

Kindergarten through 8th grade.

You don't have to be a certain kind of reader. You don't have to love crafts. You don't have to be a gamer. You don't have to be an expert at anything. You just have to be willing to join the adventure.

Library League is designed so younger and older kids can all belong to the same community while participating in challenges that fit their interests and abilities.

A New Reason to Come to the Library

Our old After School Programs gave kids a chance to come to the library for LEGO, Art, STEM, and other activities. Library League takes those same kinds of experiences and connects them into something that can last much longer than a single program. Instead of asking: "What are we doing today?" Library League asks: "What are we working toward?"

And we think that's a pretty exciting question.
